Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewage systems, pipelines, structural components of buildings, and railways. Civil engineering is traditionally broken into a number of sub-disciplines. It is considered the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it is defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. Civil engineering can take place in the public sector from municipal public works departments through to federal government agencies, and in the private sector from locally based firms to global Fortune 500 companies.
Civil engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles for solving the problems of society, and its history is intricately linked to advances in the understanding of physics and mathematics throughout history. Because civil engineering is a broad profession, including several specialized sub-disciplines, its history is linked to knowledge of structures, materials science, geography, geology, soils, hydrology, environmental science, mechanics, project management, and other fields.
1. Civil engineers plan, design, and supervise the construction and maintenance of building and infrastructure projects.
2. These projects may include facilities, bridges, roads, tunnels, and water and sewage systems.
3. Conducting site visits, monitoring schedules, and supervising technicians. Running field operations, offering technical support, and troubleshooting on-site issues.
4. Ensuring on-site efficiency and safety at all times.
5. Estimating costs, approving project designs, and preparing contracts.
1. Civil engineering projects can come through the public sector, from government agencies, or through the private sector, and can be either large or small in scale, with civil engineers working in fields such as planning, budgeting, project and asset management, research, analysis, and more.
2. In PSU's like Railways, Airport Authorities of India, Public Works Department and Central Public Works Department, ONGC and Petroleum Corporations, etc.
3. In Core Sectors like L&T, Shapoorji Pallonji Group, Tata Consultancy, Punj Lloyd, Consolidated Construction Consortium Ltd (CCCL), Bridge & Roof Co (India) Limited, Coastal Projects Pvt Ltd (CPPL), etc.
